Sierra de los Ajos Education Project
Tucson Audubon Society

Our Education Coordinator counterpart in Sonora, Yadir Lazcano, has been hard at work visiting several small communities (ejidos) in and around the reserve boundaries. Over a period of six weeks, she has met with community leaders, schools and municipalities. During the visits, Yadir gives a presentation on the reserve for community groups and leads environmental education activities with local school children and their teachers. Where possible, she meets with groups interested in working on conservation projects (school gardens, composting, etc.) or in small business ventures looking for alternative cash markets that relieve impact on the natural resources of the reserve.

She has been well received and is working with two very ambitious groups on a composting project and small bakery. We are awaiting news from the state-level education department about when we can offer a series of educator workshops. We will most likely begin late this fall or in early spring of 2001.
