Important Binational Sonoran Desert Ecological Analysis

The Nature Conservancy, Sonoran Institute, and Instituto del Medio Ambiente y el Desarrollo Sustentable del Estado de Sonora have completed a two year bi-national study entitled An Ecological Analysis of Conservation Priorities in the Sonoran Desert Region. It identifies conservation priorities in the 55 million-acre Sonoran Desert Ecoregion, which includes portions of Arizona, California, Baja California, and Sonora.

The study attempted to identify a network of 100 large conservation sites that, if appropriately managed, will ensure that the majority of the Ecoregion’s biodiversity remains viable over the forseeable future. The large sites identified which are fairly near Tucson are the Sawtooth-Silverbell Mountains (which recently were preserved in the Ironwood Forest National Monument - see cover page of this issue of the Flycatcher), Tucson Mountains, Tortolita Mountains, Sabino Canyon, East Tucson Riparian Complex, Cienega Creek, and the Santa Rita Mountains.

A copy of the Analysis is available at the Tucson Audubon library and also may be purchased from The Nature Conservancy for $25.00.
