Tucson Audubon's Conservation Committee is made up of board members, staff members and other volunteers. Meeting monthly, the committee considers a range of conservation issues. Chris McVie is Vice President of Tucson Audubon as well as being Chair of the Conservation Committee. She has lived in Tucson almost as long as Tucson Audubon has been in business. After moving to the northwest side in the 1980s, Chris and her husband Doug became involved with their neighbors in community issues facing the burgeoning area. Doug and Chris participated in the original Pima County Comprehensive Planning process in 1992, became involved with the efforts to incorporate the Town of Tortolita, and were founding board members of Desert Watch. They were inspired to volunteer with Tucson Audubon after meeting Kevin Dahl while advocating for the Cactus Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl and serving on the Pima College Northwest Campus Site Selection Committee. Before they knew it, Kevin had them clearing paths through the rattlesnakes in the citrus grove at Mrs. Mason’s house, now the Mason Audubon Center. The McVies served five years as members of Pima County’s Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan steering committee and also as members of the county’s 2002 northwest comprehensive plan advisory committee. Chris has served on the Tucson Audubon Board of Directors for the past five years and she is honored to be a part of the oldest and most respected organization of its kind in Tucson. She and the other members of the committee are open to hearing and discussing conservation issues and priorities. Current items under consideration are reform of State Trust Land management, implementation of Pima County’s Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan, and involvement of our community in partnership with local, state, and federal agencies to encourage regional improved wildlife and habitat management. If you have an issue you would like the Conservation Committee to consider, please contact her at cmcvie@desertwatch.org.
