Tucson Audubon Society
Environmental Education Resources for Teachers and Students

Urban Biology Curriculum Series
These are upper elementary science units. Teaching and learning require active participation to fully utilize and understand the wonders of the complex world around us. However, with little or no funding for off-site field trips and with a concentration on testing, many educators are bound to their school sites. To this end, three unique science curricula that have been developed as part of the Tucson Audubon Society’s Urban Biology Series make use of the countless, living-science subjects just outside the school doors. Get your copies now, on sale for $10.00 each in the Tucson Audubon Nature Shop, southeast corner of University Blvd. and 5th Ave.

1. Desert Birding in Arizona, by Doris Evans (focus on urban birds)

2. Urban Weeds (Dr. Strangeplant), by David Lazaroff

3. Arthropodantics (arthropods) by Janet Bardwell, Doris Evans, and Robin Roche

TREE Center

The Tremendous Resources in Environmental Education Center offers lots of great educational materials you can check out from Tucson Audubon Society, free of charge! Materials include books, videos, audio tapes, and resource kits.
There are six resource kits:
Mammal, bird, and reptile skulls
Bird specimens
Bird nests
Bird eggs
Binoculars
Urban birding kit (corresponding to the Urban Birding in Arizona curriculum—see below)
Resources may be checked out for varying lengths of time, two weeks being the norm. There is only one set of each kit, and due to the high demand, advance reservations are strongly suggested. Call first to inquire about availability, resource specifics, or to reserve materials: Carrie Dean, 622-2230.

Mason Audubon Center Activity Kits
The Mason Audubon Center is located in northwest Tucson at 3835 W. Hardy Road on the southwest corner of Thornydale and Hardy Roads. Activity kits may be checked out for up to two weeks, free of charge; advance reservations are strongly recommended. Educators are responsible for picking up the kits from and returning them to the Mason Audubon Center and for replacing/repairing lost or damaged materials. The Mason Audubon Center kits contain corresponding curriculum.

The following is a list of each kit available from the Mason Audubon Center: Introduction to Birding, Birding in the Field, A Bird’s Tool Kit, Incredible Journeys: Migration, Saguaro Story, A Sonoran Sense of Place, Desert Adaptations, Botany Basics, Plant ID: Learning to Use a Key, Ironwood: Trees of Life, Tracks and Scats, Skulls, Arthropod Adventures, Herps and Bats.

Mason Audubon Center Field Trips
Educational and environmental groups may schedule a visit to this 22-acre, ironwood-saguaro habitat site for a fee of $25/hour with a minimum of 2 hours. Groups are scheduled on a first-come, first-serve basis and must be accompanied by Mason Audubon Center staff or naturalists for the duration of the program. To learn more about the site and its resources, see contact information below. Limit of 30 students per visit.

Classroom Presentations
In-class presentations, in a wide array of topics, can be arranged. Presentations are $25/hour. Topics include, but are not limited to: Arthropods (with live tarantula and scorpion), Reptiles (with live snake), Introduction to Bird Identification, Saguaro Story (Interrelationships), Skull Lesson (Mammal Skulls), Desert Adaptations, Birding In and Around Your Schoolyard.
