Donate to Tucson Audubon

Founded in 1949, Tucson Audubon Society is southern Arizona's leading non-profit engaging people in the conservation of birds and their habitats. We involve people through recreational birding, extend their horizons through education programs, and engage them in conservation actions from planting trees and counting birds, to working with local, state, and national policy makers.  Your generous support makes our work possible — THANK YOU!

Tucson Audubon's Summer Appeal--The Gilded Flicker

GIFL_JBurnsDo you ever look closely at the saguaros around you in Tucson? Next time you're out, try counting how many holes you can see in them. Did you know that 15 kinds of birds nest in these excavated cavities, including the Elf Owl, American Kestrel, and Purple Martin? They all depend on two key desert residents—the Gila Woodpecker and the Gilded Flicker—to actually create the holes.

More than 90 percent of Gilded Flickers in the United States live in southern Arizona. They are truly a specialty of our region and rely on us for their well-being. By providing nest sites for other birds, Gilded Flickers sustain the rich community of bird species we all enjoy. The Gilded Flicker is rightfully called a keystone species. I was startled then to learn from the Tucson Bird Count that Gilded Flicker is one of the first birds that disappear when we degrade natural habitat for other uses. You will probably be shocked to learn that Gilded Flicker populations have declined 60 percent over the last 40 years.

Donate today to ensure our work to build broad grassroots support for birds and the places they live continues. Your donation is especially important now as funding always takes a steep dip during Tucson’s hot season.
