If you have ever been to one of Tucson Audubon’s volunteer restoration workdays, you may have met Paul Branson. Paul is the brains and brawn behind Earthwise Technologies, his own business that specializes in habitat restoration and permaculture yard design. He and his crew of two, Matt Griffiths and Aurel Piantanida, work with Tucson Audubon to help design and implement plans for restoring our sites like the North Simpson Farm and Esperanza Ranch.

Paul has a long history with Tucson Audubon that began with studying restoration ecology with Ann Phillips, our Manager of Restoration Projects, and working as a crewmember on some of the earlier projects. As Tucson Audubon’s restoration program began to expand, a need arose for an organized contractor crew to focus primarily on the "on-the-ground" work. Paul was just the man to develop and lead that crew, and his new company Earthwise Technologies was the perfect venue for organizing this specialized kind of work.

Paul has developed innovative techniques for eradicating tumbleweed using acetic acid (concentrated vinegar); he’s constructed countless earthen water-harvesting structures; and he is expert at designing and installing really big irrigation systems for our extensive restoration sites. His ethic of earth care is a deeply held value. He often goes beyond the call of duty by volunteering extra time at the restoration sites and the Mason Audubon Center. When not working at Tucson Audubon restoration sites, he has a number of residential clients who benefit from his extensive knowledge and creative designs for water harvesting and native plantings. Paul’s input and efforts in restoring habitat have been invaluable. Thank you, Paul, for all you do!
