Tucson Audubon Society There is a major new addition to Tucson Audubon’s habitat restoration program. Along with the North Simpson site, we will now be restoring habitat at a 300-acre conservation easement along the Santa Cruz River between Tubac and Amado. The site is called Esperanza Ranch and will be the focus of our volunteer program this fall and winter, with monthly Saturday volunteer work days scheduled for October through February. Volunteer work days have been extremely productive at the Simpson Farm site. We hope to attract many volunteers, some experienced and some new, to the Esperanza site. Volunteer work days will continue at the Simpson Farm site, scheduled monthly from October through December. Birding field trips and site tours of both sites will also be available. A special, and long-awaited, volunteer day will occur September 17 when Greg Clark from Wild at Heart will release Burrowing Owls at newly-constructed artificial burrow sites. He will need help erecting the tent the owls stay in for the first 30 days. Many volunteers helped to build the artificial burrows last spring and we are sure many of them will want to be on hand again! On October 5, the United Way "Days of Caring" program will bring volunteers from interested corporations to Tucson Audubon’s "Nanini" site, a two-acre property adjacent to the Omni National Golf Course. Trail building, habitat restoration and trash pickup activities will take place. If your business is interested in learning about this opportunity or others made available by this United Way program, visit the web site at www.volunteersolutions.org/vctucson/volunteer/news/one.tcl?item_id=6154007.
